Why Choose Microsuction

Ear microsuction is the latest, safest and most modern way to remove earwax blockages. It involves the use of a gentle suction device, similar to a small vacuum cleaner, which helps to loosen and remove any impacted earwax. The procedure will be carried out by a trained professional. A complete a full ear canal assessment will be carried out to determine if the procedure is necessary. Once your microsuction session is complete, an octoscope will be used to ensure that all impacted ear wax has successfully been removed.

Prices include the initial consultation, and either microsuction, irrigation or manual removal of wax in either one or both ear canals.

What causes earwax? Earwax can be caused by varying different factors. Working in a dusty environment, having narrow ear canals, using cotton buds, hair pins and anything else that may lead to pushing wax deeper in the ear. Wearing head/ earphones & hearing aids also restricts the natural outward migration of earwax.

What are the symptoms of earwax?

Earwax symptoms can vary, if you experience any of the following, then get in touch:

  • Hearing loss

  • Tinnitus (ringing/buzzing)

  • Ear pain Fullness/blocked sensation

  • Dizziness

  • Excessive itching

What to do before I visit you:

Please soften the wax in the 3 days before your appointment

It's important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible. We recommend using 3 olive oil drops, or a spray such as Earol (which is olive oil), three times per day in the affected ear and repeat for 3 days.

£60 for one or both ears. Both ears will be inspected and cleaned or cleared if necessary.

Give me a call before your appointment if any of the below are applicable to you, as I may not be able to proceed with wax removal:

  • Dry, tickly, or irritable throat

  • Poor head and neck control

  • Diabetes

  • Currently taking blood thinning medication

  • High or low blood pressure

Who can have this treatment?

This procedure is safe for children and adults, however, children will need to be individually assessed on a case by case basis.

It is safe for people who are deaf and have hearing impediments, people living with dementia or living with an autism spectrum disorder?

This service is ideal for those that are housebound or bedbound. It is also ideal for busy individuals that require out of hours services and would like to skip the NHS waiting list.

Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

Olive oil based ear drops or sprays are recommended morning and evening for threedays before our visit. This will soften the build-up of earwax and make removal easier.

How long does the procedure take?

On average wax removal procedure can take between 5-15 minutes per ear. This is dependent upon the amount of earwax, the positioning of earwax and consistency of the earwax.

Is it painful? & What are the risks?

The procedure should be painless. As with any procedure, ear microsuctioning and gentle irrigation carries a small amount of risk and potential side effects, most of which are very rare, but they are made clear prior to your appointment.

When to speak to your GP

There are some instances when we will not be able to perform wax removal and would advise you speak to your GP to seek help, these are:

Any middle ear infections within the last 90 days

Any current or recurrent ear infection

Any past operations in or around the ear

Suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal

Suspect you have a perforated eardrum

Any fluid or discharge from inside your ear within the last 90 days

Please don’t put any olive oil or wax softening solution in your ears if any of these conditions apply to you.
